End of Summer Concerts Part 1: Here Come the Mummies

As you might have noticed from the top right corner of this blog, we have T-minus 5 days until HCTM come to town!

If any of you guys took a little trip back to my first blog post (if not, then I'll fill you in) you'll remember how I decided to start a blog like this after I saw Here Come the Mummies perform for the third time at Crossroads. The images I'm bombarded with every time I see them in concert always move me: The music! The moves! The costumes! This band takes their performance to another level of theatricality that I seldom see with bands that roll into Huntsville on a regular basis. The point is: HCTM really do take their band name and run with it, reveling in all it's campy glory. Which means they do dress up like mummies. They have their own unique personas to go along with these costumes, including Bucking Blanco, Ramses, and the ever popular Libido Knievel (who has a couple of songs to go along with his little side show). There are around 13 members to this band, who play everything from trumpets and saxophones, to guitars and keyboards, to chains (it's hard to explain this one, so you'll just have to see them in concert). The type of music they play can only be described by me as funk music at its most primal.
Aside from the crazy antics of the show, these guys are quality musicians (according to their wikipedia page, they are professional musicians from Nashville who disguise themselves in mummy attire because they are under contract with different record labels) who put on a great live show, and even jump in the crowd to interact with the audience. One crazy mummy attack-hugged my friend at the last concert. I'm not sure how she felt about it, but I know she will remember it for years to come, and that's exactly these concerts have a cult following. Their fourth album Carnal Carnival , was released last year, and they have also recently released a live DVD, Undead Live. HCTM plays most of the songs on all of their albums, so if you come to one of their concerts, be prepared to be standing (or dancing) for over two hours. But if you don't want to be up front and center Crossroads has tables on the second floor, as well as booths off to the side, so if you want to pop a squat get there early. Tickets are available on the Crossroads website www.crossroadsmusic.biz.

And for all things Mummy you can go to their homepage www.herecomethemummies.com, or their facebook or myspace page. And for those reverbnation users, I have most of their music posted on my page for those who want a little preview. I was actually hoping to purchase some Mummy swag before the concert, including a red t-shirt with the words “Everyone Loves a Sexy Mummy” emblazoned on the front. That statement is definitely true for me, but I have to wonder about the rest of the population: DOES everyone love a sexy mummy?

I think in Huntsville the answer is yes.
